Thurcroft Colliery N.U.M. Banner Project.
I am very pleased to inform every one that the Banner has now been cased and housed in the local Church.
It has taken myself ( Fred Gething ) and Pat Fortune almost two years from talking about the banner and how we could achieve the goal of getting it housed in Thurcroft Church. We had to find the funding, for the project to pay to have the banner partly re-painted, and a case made, take the banner up to the City of Durham for the re-paint to be done. Get permission from the local church wardens and higher church officials. and find some one to make the case as we wanted. We are very grateful to Mr Geb Nightingale for
the help in getting the funding for the case and banner re-pair. The local church warden's in getting us the permission to have the banner housed in St Simon and St Luke our local church, and many thanks to
Mr Bulmer ( Joiner's ) of Dinnington for the case and it's fitting into the church plus there patience for the waiting until we had full permission from the church. A Plaque will be made for the case in the next few weeks.
A sequence of photographs below show Banner / Case being fitted into the church.
A small caption above each photo helps to explain things.
Pat Fortune below in church unrolling the banner.
Mr Bulmer and his mate making the inner frame to hold the banner.
Due to the size of the banner and weight of the case plus wall space available in the church the outside gold coloured material had to be folded behind the inner frame. The position of the banner in church is on the only wall area big enough
to take the banner. Mr Bulmer is seen fastening to banner to the inner frame.

Two wooden stretchers are being screwed to the wall to help carry the weight on the banner and case.
Thats me (Fred) below holding the banner as the joiners fit the case to the wall and prepare the oak surround.

The laminated glass is now fitted into the case with temp holding blocks, it took both joiners Pat and myself to lift
the glass into position due to the heavy weight.

Two happy joiners, Mr Bulmer on the right with his work mate, and a completed job well done.
Below, Pat Fortune on the left, Fred Gething on the right shake hands in front of the completed case.
A job well done, and satisfaction after almost a two year project to find a way to get the banner into church.
A plaque will be fixed to the case in the next week or two.
