Thurcroft Colliery N.U.M Banner.
A Project has begun by Pat Fortune and myself to have the Above Banner housed in a case and placed in Thurcroft Church. The banner needs some repair ( repaint ) and a case will need to be made, contact with the church has been made and the local church authorities are quite happy for the banner to have a resting place in the church. Much more agreements have to be made with higher church officials before we get to the point of having the banner housed in the church, a quote by a Durham restores for work on the banner as been received. Joiners / Carpenters have been asked for a quote to have a case made of wood with a glass front, at the time of writing we await the approx cost of the work to be done. Grants for the total amount of money are being sought. We hope the work to have the Banner housed in the church can be completed in the next 6 to 12 months. It is hoped that a plaque will also be made to acompany the Banner. regards, Fred Gething.

As can be seen by the photographs the Banner has of today (10/5/2015) is now cased and housed in Thurcroft Church.
It has taken Pat Fortune and myself (Fred Gething) almost two years from talking about trying to get the Banner housed
to today to accomplish it. We would like to thank Mr Geb Nightingale for his help in funding the partial repair of the
Banner, the local church authorities for there help in getting permission for the banner to be housed in the church and
Mr Bulmer the Joiner who made the frame and his patience until we got the go a head from the church.
A small caption above each photo indicates the the sequence of events.

Mr Bulmer and his mate making the inner frame and fitting the banner to it.
Due to the size of the Banner / weight of the case and the wall space available in the church the outside Gold coloured
material had to be folded and fastened behind the frame.

Two stretchers are being screwed to the wall to help carry the weight of the case
Thats me (Fred) holding the banner while the joiners fix the case to the wall and prepare the oak surround.
Case if screwed to the two wood stretchers on the wall and banner is being fitted into case.
The laminated glass is now fitted into the case with temp holding blocks, it took both joiners, myself and Pat to lift
the glass into position due to the heavy weight.

The oak surround is being fitted into place and is getting a coat of clear preservative to bring it into line with the
other wood partition and colouring that's in the church.

Two happy joiners, Mr Bulmer on the right, with his mate, and a completed job well done.
Pat Fortune on the left, Fred Gething on the right shake hands in front of the completed case.
A job well done, and satisfaction after almost a two year project to find a way to fund the partial re-paint of the banner,
to fund the building and fitting of a tailor made case and getting the permission to house it in the local Church.
A small plaque is to be made and fitted to the case in the next couple of weeks.

The top three photo's show the winding drum shaft being worked on by engineers from Markham (Chesterfield ) Ltd.
The key ways had become a little slack on the shaft, a wooden table was made so the lathe could sit close to the drum.
the winding engine was then put into motion and the lathe moved ( Back and Forwards) to create a new surface.
