The postcard below was very kindly sent in by Mr Trevor Flavell, it shows Briscoe's store on Woodhouse Green, and postmarked 17 July 1923. The postcard was written by Florence Victoria Flavell (1901-1987), the daughter of Ernest Flavell ( 1873-1941) and Mary Ann Brisco (1874=1963). Mr Flavell says he is not sure how long Briscoe's ran the Store/Post Office as Kelly's Directory of 1927, notes the Sub Postmaster as Mr S A Ball.

Dear Fred,
I write regarding the article in last weeks' Advertiser regarding the picture of Wiltshire Villa sent in by John North and posted on the website.
My nan actually picked up on the article and highlighted it to me and mum.
Nanan and grandad are Maureen and Alan Moon - grandad sadly died in 2012 but nan is still very much going strong.
Grandad was a Thurcroft man, being the youngest of the 6 Moon brothers many Thurcroft people will know - Herbert, Len, "Ginner", Neg, Ken and Alan.
When they were first married my grandparents lived in Maltby and Stainton, but as grandad (with brothers Ken and Neg) was a plasterer by trade and always looking for a house with land in the Thurcroft area, saw the potential in the Wiltshire Villa plot whilst passing when it was up for sale. Nanan and Grandad bought the house, as it is in the picture, in 1963 and moved into the White House. My aunty was born in it in 1964. The plan was always to replace the house with a more modern bungalow and this was built by my grandparents (with help from local tradesmen) in 1966, further back from the road where it still stands today. In that same year the White House was gradually dismantled. The upper floors were demolished, by hand with a sledgehammer by my nanan's grandad - by then already in his 70s. The last of the house and the footings were demolished by bulldozer and the rubble taken away to form foundations of the nearby Double Barrel which was being built at the same time.
Mum grew up in the house and nanan and grandad stayed there until selling it on in 1983 and moving to Throapham.
I hope this is of interest and might be worth publishing in the paper or on the website.
I will follow on with a photo which I think is a very early one from Thurcroft which I think will be of interest.
Best Regards,
Jordan Yates, Maltby

The second email from Jordan concerns the Football photograph below.
Hi Again Fred,
I am attaching a photo I know very little about but maybe somebody on the website will be able to shed light on.
The photo is of a football team in which my great-grandfather, Charles Herbert Moon, is the chap in the bottom right. I'd be interested to know if anyone can place the team, or any of the other people in the photo. All I know is my great-grandfather moved from Somerset to Thurcroft, together with his brother Edgar, some time between 1911 and 1916 and judging on his age in the photo I think this is during this period. Charlie died in Thurcroft in 1943 leaving wife Florrie and 6 sons, most of them keen footballers! My grandad was only 10 at the time.
Charlie and Edgar's sisters also moved from Somerset to the Thurcroft area too - they were Annie Seymour and Susan Jane Sheppard.
Charlie and Edgar married two sisters, Florence and Amy Few. Florrie remained in Thurcroft for many years until at least the 1980s. Regards.

Message below from Paul Jowitt
Date: 09/01/2015, Paul Jowitt (Edinburgh) I was looking for a photo of Laughton Common Station/Station Road. My G'father lived there as a young man (blacksmith at Dinnington pit). And I chanced upon your website!
It's fantastic!
I was brought up in Thurcroft, My g'mother, and then my mother (nee Joan Goundry) ran the "Goundry General Stores" at 48/48A Laughton Road.
And I noticed she is in one of your photo collections: Thurcroft Photos 2, the very last one of the Toc H Christmas Tea. Front Row, 3rd from the left: Annie Elizabeth Goundry (nee Coleman). She used to play the piano for the community singing at such things as Toc H, the Darby and Joan Club etc.
She was brought up at the St Leger in Laughton. My g'father William Goundry used to hawk fruit and veg on a horse and cart in Thurcroft before WW2. After the war he became a "bookie" (before off course betting became legal!)
I will try to dig out some photos and send them to you (Please let me know how to do this).
What a fabulous website! Many names and places I knew well!
And I saw the very photo I was looking for - Laughton Common/Dinnington Station looking north with Laughton Church in the distance. I think the houses in the mid-distance are on Station Road, and the left hand end of a terrace of 11 houses is just visible. I think he lived at the other end of the terrace!
Kind regards, Paul Jowitt.

The photographs below were very kindly sent in by Paul Jowitt, and show his Grandfather's ( William Goundry )
with his Lorry and Fruit and Veg business in Thurcroft in the 1930s
All the photos concern my grandfather William (Bill) Goundry in some way or another. In 1911 he lived at Laughton Common and was a blacksmith at the pit. He married Annie Elizabeth Coleman – youngest daughter of the landlord at the St Leger Arms at Laughton. Initially they lived at the Old Riddings (101 Laughton Road). My mother Joan Goundry was born there (and years later, she and my father built the house at 103 on the land which was once an apple orchard and allotments next door), William and Annie then moved to the New Riddings (48-54 Laughton Road). By this time he was a General Dealer/Fruiterer. The lorry in the photos below – all from the 1930s) is his fruiterer’s lorry.
First photo shows Mr Goundry's Lorry and Peter the Dog in the drive at New Riddings, - 48 Laughton Road.
. Photo no 1is the gable end of Holloways. The shed on the left was where Bill would have stored his fruit and veg. It was still there until at least the early 1990s! I remember weighing bags of potatoes in it for the shop in the 1960s. To me it was always the potato shed!.. Not long after the OAP Bungalows were built up the bottom of School Road and round into Waverly Avenue.

The letter below is from Mrs Margaret Smith ( nee Orridge ) in response to Paul Jowitt's the one above.
I have just read the letter from Paul jowitt on the web site I remember him in the year below us at the grammar school and his grandparents also his mother and father. Mr goundry was still coming round with his fruit and veg when I was growing up and my mum still owes him ten shillings for a sack of potatoes. When he came over from Australia he came in the pub and mum reminded him . His dad was high up in the police force and years ago when a gang from maltby were coming over for a fight with thurcroft youths Stan jowitt met them on his own at the top of kings forth and got them to go back. Joan Paul's mother was in the forces and she met up with my dad joe and uncle bill in Cairo during the war. Mum said there is a photo of them on camels. I really must get through the cases of photos we have and let you have them. I have wrote nearly a book for my grandson to read about growing up in thurcroft in the 50s and 60s and they all think it's hilarious but secretly like it if I dare I will let you have it as it mentions all the traders who used to come round the village. Anyway hope this reaches you as I am only just getting into the 21st century with this pad keep up the good work.
